Medigap open enrollment in Tennessee

Your one-time window to buy a Medicare Supplement policy with the strongest federal protections.

The federal Medigap Open Enrollment Period

Your Medigap Open Enrollment Period usually lasts 6 months. It starts the first month you are 65 or older and enrolled in Part B.

During this window, you can buy any Medigap policy sold in Tennessee that you qualify for by age. Companies generally must sell it to you without medical underwriting and without charging more because of past health conditions (guaranteed issue).

Why timing matters

After this window, insurers in Tennessee may ask health questions and can deny or rate-up a policy (except in certain guaranteed-issue situations defined by federal and state rules). If Medigap is part of your plan, do not wait until the window closes to compare.

Medigap and Medicare Advantage

You usually cannot use a Medigap policy with a Medicare Advantage plan. Medigap works with Original Medicare. If you drop Medigap to try Advantage, you may not be able to get the same Medigap policy back later without underwriting — know the trial-right rules before you switch.

Tennessee note

Tennessee follows federal Medigap standards for standardized plans. State rules can add consumer protections; confirm current details with a licensed Tennessee agent or the Tennessee Department of Commerce & Insurance.
